College hockey is one of many sports wherein high school students apply to avail of an athletic scholarship. With an athletic scholarship, students get to play the sport they are talented in, while pursuing a college degree.
When hockey began to emerge as a popular sport in Canada, it went by no official name. It was instead referred to as Hurley, Wicket, Ricket and Break-Shins. The origin of the word hockey is in itself a contentious subject. There are claims that the word is a derivative of the French word hoquet, meaning “a shepherd’s crook.” However, there is a story in the town of Windsor, Nova Scotia, regarding a certain Colonel Hockey, who used the game to keep his troops healthy and invigorated. It is said that the game soon adopted his name, since people referred to these military workouts as “Hockey’s Game.”
Hockey was considered an amateur sport until 1904. This was when the first professional hockey league was created. Interestingly, it was created in the United States, and it was called the International Pro Hockey League. Three years later, the National Hockey Association (NHA) was formed. However, World War I threw the entire hockey establishment into confusion, and the men in charge of the NHA suspended operations.
Some of the larger schools with top-notch college hockey programs do have large recruiting budgets, but most do not. An individual needs to let the college he wishes to attend know what he can do to improve their college hockey team.
The Internet has proven to be a useful venue for students aiming for an athletic scholarship. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact.
